The center of Chile, with the two cities Santiago and Valparaiso, has a Mediterranean climate with average temperatures of 28°C in January and 11°C in July. There are about 15 million people living in Chile at the moment. The country's official language is Spanish. Most people, about 10 million, live in the center of Chile around Valparaiso and Santiago, on about 20% of the total territory. In Chile you must go to the army and to school. 2.7% are not able to read. In comparison to the other countries in South America, Chile has got the best school system. Chilean people is composed at 90% by caucasian coming from Europe. 3% of the population is Indian, like Mapuche or Rapa-nui.
